I came across Akiko Ikeuchi's work while researching artists working with string. I was instantly awe-struck by her impossibly complex sculptures made entirely of delicate silk threads. It is evident from her blueprints, which can be seen here on her website, that the seemingly tangled, happenstance sculptures are in fact tediously planned out. I find her work beautifully ethereal, ephemeral, and at times eerie. Although I could not find a summative artist statement, I perceive Ikeuchi's work to deal with extreme precision of craft, meticulous planning, pushing of the boundaries of "sculpture," and activating of spaces with minimal materials.
